GEORGE W. GAMMON was born Feb. 8th, l8l9, near Knoxville, Tenn. Died at his home on Eden Prairie, Decatur County, Iowa, Aug. 22d, l895. His father moved to Putnam County, Indiana, when George was quite young. He was married to MARTHA ROBINSON in l839 and in l849 moved to Monroe Co., Iowa, where his children were born; there being 7 sons and 4 daughters, who are still living, except a son who died when l3 years old.

In l865, MR. GAMMON came to Decatur Co. and bought the farm on which he has since lived. UNCLE GEORGE was a good neighbor and an honorable citizen; a kind father and an affectionate husband. He was much attached to his home, where you would nearly always find him. His companion preceded him to the grave only about l0 months, leaving him struggling between life and death. Although racked with pain almost continuously he never complained but bore up most heroically 'til tired nature could stand no more, when death released him from his sufferings. He was highly esteemed by all who knew him as fully demonstrated on the day of his funeral, Aug. 25th at his home, for people came for miles around to pay the last tribute of respect the living can to the dead.

The funeral services were conducted by Bro. Martin, with appropriate readings of scripture, prayer and a few remarks and suitable hymns by a choir of excellent voices. The Masonic fraternity took charge of the body and gave it a suitable burial, which he was so honorably entitled to, having been a member of Grand River Lodge No. 78 for many years. The following to the cemetery was very large, being estimated over 700 persons.
